Darfur

Congressman Moran has been at the forefront of the fight to end the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan.  He has co-sponsored every piece of major legislation seeking to bring a stop to the genocide in Darfur.  An original cosponsor of the two leading bills, the "Darfur Peace and Accountability Act" and the "Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act," Congressman Moran has gone on to press the U.S. to provide over $1 billion million in funding assistance to the war-torn region.

The Congressman believes that, while grave, the situation in Darfur can be alleviated if we hold Sudan responsible for their actions and continue to speak out against the atrocities occurring there.  A member of the Sudan Caucus and the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, Representative Moran has strongly urged the Administration and the international community to step up and do what is right in Darfur.

In April 2006, Congressman Moran joined with a number of his colleagues to protest at the Sudanese Embassy.  They were arrested for their efforts, but exposure from the event sent a message loud and clear to the Sudanese Government that their actions were not going unwatched.  The Congressman later spoke at Save Darfur Coalition rally of over 10,000 people at the Capitol, and continues to speak out frequently on Darfur, whether on the House floor, in briefings with other Members, or in nationally televised interviews.
