Relighting the Capitol Dome with environmentally friendly lighting, greening the House cafeterias and buying wind power — those represent the goals and accomplishments of a challenging plan to make the U.S. House of Representatives more environmentally friendly.

The man executing the “Green the Capitol” Initiative, House Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Beard, will be in Portland March 27 – March 29, where he will discuss efforts to make the House carbon neutral at the Portland Expo Center’s Better Living Show.

During his visit, Beard will also participate in a March 28 roundtable discussion at the University of Oregon’s White Stag building. The grand opening of the retrofitted building is in September, but members of the media are invited for a sneak peak Friday afternoon.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi charged Beard with making the House carbon neutral by the end of 2008. After less than one year of operating under the initiative, the House has implemented a wide-ranging innovative actions designed to reduce energy consumption, offset carbon emissions and change the way the House does business. The House is ahead of schedule and will likely achieve neutrality by Earth Day this year.
