More About Jerome County

Jerome County, the second to the last county (43rd) created in the state, was established on February 8, 1919, with its county seat at Jerome. Three sources for the name are commonly given: Jerome Hill, one of the developers of North Side Irrigation Project; his grandson, Jerome Kuhn Jr.; or his son-in-law, Jerome Kuhn. All were important individuals to the growth of the county.

What To See And Do:

Idaho Farm & Ranch MuseumThis outdoor display, located northeast of the I-84/Highway 93 junction, was developed to preserve the agricultural heritage in south-central Idaho.  Live History Day, held the second Saturday in June each year, features old-time farming and family life brought into the present day.

Jerome County Historical MuseumThe displays in this museum are focused on one of the most important developments in Idaho--irrigation.  The North Side Irrigation project, one of hte most successful Carey Irrigation Act porjects, was instrumental in making the land in Jerome County farmable.  There is also a large research library with newspapers dating back to the beginning of the town in 1908, and detailed indexes for those who are interested.

Minidoka National Monument: This project, which will recognize relocation of thousands of individuals of Japanese ancestry who were living on the West Coast to Idaho, is still in the development phase.  Minidoka was one of ten relocation camps in the US.  A display of historic and modern photographs, information, literature and brochures is availabe at the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument.  The National Park Service is working with the Friends of Minidoka to establish the Issei Memorial at the site of the relocation camp.
