More About Gooding County

Gooding County was established on January 28, 1913, with its county seat at Gooding. It was the 28th county created. It was named for Frank R. Gooding, a pioneer sheep rancher, early mayor of Gooding city, and later Idaho Governor and U.S. Senator. Mountain men and fur traders trapped the Malad River extensively in the early 1800s. Settlers came to the rich agricultural lands of the Hagerman Valley in the 1860s.

Gooding County Historical MuseumOne of the state's newest museum, the Gooding County Museum aims to become the paper repository for the area for those interested in family history, county history and state history. For many years, the museum operated in the original post office building on Main Street, but the building deteriorated to the point of being unsafe and was closed to the public.  The Historical Society is raising funds to purchase a new building to house the museum, which will be located on land donated by the City of Gooding.

The Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind is a residential school located in Gooding County about 30 minutes from Twin Falls, Idaho. The school began in 1906 in the Delamar Hotel in Boise, Idaho. James T. Watson was head of the school then. There were 23 deaf students and 1 blind student. The school began to grow and in 1909 the first two main buildings, the boy's dormitory and the main building, were built on its current location in 1909. In 1920 the school started working under the name of Gooding College.

The program has grown extensively and now has students traveling from all over Idaho to attend. The school is committed to providing quality educational programs encouraging each student to realize his/her full potential in the areas of intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth.
