Foreign Policy

The preeminent concern facing our country and our foreign policy is the war in Iraq and the repercussions around the world of the Bush Administration’s foreign policy choices. Our first priority should be to transition the mission in Iraq so that our troops are no longer refereeing a civil war.

While I was in Iraq, I saw that there is a tremendous gap between the strong commitment of our troops and that of the Iraqi government. From my meetings with top Iraqi officials, I am convinced that there is no sense of urgency to improve the political situation in Iraq. To say that the Iraqi government is unstable is an understatement. I saw no real sense of progress in Iraq. And nothing I saw or heard on my trip to Iraq changed my opinion that we must change course in Iraq.

I will also keep a vigilant eye on the threats posed by Iran and North Korea. Unfortunately, these two members of what President Bush called the “axis of evil” have been allowed to flourish.

One of the great humanitarian crises of our time is in Darfur. There is much to be done in Darfur. One way that I have focused on helping to improve the dire situation and end the genocide is to make it harder for companies to support the Sudanese government. I strongly support the Sudan Divestment Act that would protect state and local government that prohibit the investment of their assets in companies which operate in Sudan.

The Bush Administration talks about strategies, they talk about approaches and they receive attention for a couple of days. But we really need to create some pressure on companies who are making investment decisions or decisions about capital. This bill will create that pressure.
