Boyda Joins Forces With USPS to "Stamp Out Hunger"

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Saturday, Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District) will help deliver mail to Topeka residents in the Potwin area from 10 a.m. until noon. Rep. Boyda will also be collecting non-perishable food items along her Saturday morning trek as part of the Postal Service’s efforts to “Stamp Out Hunger.”

Postmaster Steve Pinkerton said, “This is our 16th year of collecting food in an effort to “Stamp Out Hunger.” The Topeka area has always been very generous. To date, United States Postal letter carriers have collected more than 830 million pounds of food to help feed those who otherwise may have had to go without a meal.”

The Postmaster did express concerns over this year’s take. “With today’s gas and grocery prices, we are concerned that people won’t have as much to give but we hope they can find one can of tuna or peaches in the back of their cupboard to spare.” People with food to donate can leave their non-perishable items in or near a mailbox before their mail carrier arrives on Saturday.

Rep. Boyda is excited to be a part of this effort. The Congresswoman, too, worries that people will not be able to give as much as in past years. Said Rep. Boyda, “People are hurting. It seems that almost daily, oil prices reach yet another record high – which is driving up the cost of everyday living to unprecedented levels. We see more and more Kansas families struggling just to put food on their tables.”

The Congresswoman hopes that by joining forces with the USPS she will show the people of the 2nd District of Kansas how important it is to be involved in charitable activities. Rep. Boyda added, “The only way to make a real difference is not by knowing that one person can make a difference, but that one person must make a difference.”
