Boyda Tours Flood-Damaged Southeast Kansas

EXPRESSES SYMPATHY FOR AREA RESIDENTS, SUPPORT FOR DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS

TOPEKA, KS – Areas of southeast Kansas have received as much as 20 inches of rain over the weekend, triggering widespread floods and evacuations. Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius on Saturday issued a state disaster declaration covering the counties of Anderson, Butler, Bourbon, Coffey, Cowley, Chautaqua, Linn, Montgomery, Neosho, Osage, Wilson and Woodson.

Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District), who represents much of the affected area in the U.S. House of Representatives, spent the weekend touring flood-damaged areas and meeting with state and local officials.

Boyda said, "I've seen terrible damage to so much of southeast Kansas, and my thoughts and prayers are with the flood's victims. But as tragic as these events have been, Kansans are already pulling together and working hard to recover."

Boyda added, "Given the severity of the damage, there is every reason to believe the president will declare a federal disaster and open the door to FEMA aid for area residents. With help from the federal government and the support of friends and neighbors, southeast Kansas can start down the long road to recovery."

On Saturday, Boyda visited Altoona, where evacuated residents are being sheltered in the middle school. She met with law enforcement officials, local residents, and the town's mayor. Later that day, she visited fire department and rescue teams in Neodesha, where emergency management personnel estimate that hundred homes were affected by flooding. Boyda also visited the Red Cross shelter in Yates Center, and she spoke by phone with officials at the Fredonia Red Cross shelter.

On Sunday, Boyda visited Fredonia, where she met with the mayor and county commissioners, toured the city, and visited the emergency operations center. She also visited the flood-damaged town of Quememo.
