A Note from Nancy

Dear Friend,

Yesterday was a defining moment in the history of the United States. Millions of passionate Americans helped shape the course of our nation in electing our new Commander-in-Chief. An unprecedented number of Kansans took an active role in our democracy and they were no less passionate in choosing their state and local leaders, as well as their voice in Congress.

I cannot adequately describe how honored I have been to serve as Representative of the Second District. Although I will not be returning to Washington, D.C. in 2009, I will forever be thankful for the opportunity you provided me to help make a difference for our nation and this district.

The 110th Congress took some very significant steps, including fixing the train wreck that was veterans funding. We secured approximately $18 billion in additional funding for veteran’s health care. We also helped relieve the burden on our middle class families by lowering the cost of attending college and passing legislation to strengthen and grow small business. But, there is still much to be done.

The daunting task of rebuilding our economy awaits the 111th Congress. This is going to take tremendous effort. It’s also going to require willingness to compromise from both sides of the aisle. Congress must continue to take proper care of our troops and our veterans. They deserve nothing less. Congress must work toward a common-sense energy policy that will tackle the needs of today and tomorrow. Our nation’s energy future depends on it. Congress must get a handle on our country’s health care crisis and it absolutely must find a way to reduce the budget deficit. These are all very weighty issues that have to be addressed.

I want to congratulate Lynn Jenkins and wish her the very best of luck. She has a tough road ahead but I am sure she will do a great job of addressing these issues for Kansans. I look forward to working together to make this transition as seamless as possible.

I have truly appreciated your involvement in our government these past two years! I had the privilege of replying to more than 105,000 letters, emails and phone calls from Kansans who weighed in on the many concerns facing America. While I must pass on the torch, I appeal to you to keep the patriotic fire burning by staying involved in the democratic process and continuing to make your voice heard. You’ve heard me say two things over and over during my time in office; public policy follows public opinion and democracy is a contact sport. The more people who speak up and demand change, the faster change will be enacted.

Your voice CAN and WILL continue to make a difference.
