Congress in Your Inbox - How to Help Flood-Damaged Southeast Kansas

Dear Friend,

What a great weekend! I went to Southeast Kansas with my church to help a woman sheetrock her flood-ravaged home. If any of you have participated in trips like this, you know how uplifting they can be.

The woman was simply amazing. She had been through so much over the last year, and then, in late June, had 5-6 feet of water in her house for 48 hours! Everything was ruined.

Her determination spoke volumes about the strength of southeast Kansas. Home is home, and you don't give up. You allow the community to embrace you and to bring you homemade peach pie. You allow well-meaning people to come into your home and put up sheetrock – even if their work is far, far from perfect.

So I'm ready to head back to DC with sore arms but absolutely refreshed and grateful for the change of pace.

If your church, group or family would like to help, believe me, there's still plenty to be done. Twenty counties were declared federal disaster areas. Please contact one of the following organizations or a local church for further information:

Casework Corner – Protecting Medicare Enrollment Choice

By Chad Manspeaker
District Representative

As a district representative in Congresswoman Boyda's Topeka office, I often hear complaints from Kansas seniors that Medicare and its many health care plans can be confusing. These programs, their enrollment procedures, and the many choices to make can certainly be difficult to navigate, and one goal of our constituent service office is to assist anyone who is having problems with Medicare.

Recently we heard from Ms. Maureen Price of Topeka, who was mistakenly enrolled in a Part D supplement for her prescription drug benefit. For a number of months, the program's premiums were withheld from Ms. Price's Social Security check, and all of her attempts to fix the problem met with failure and frustration.

Letter of the Week – Children's Health and Fitness

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3257, the Fitness Integrated with Teaching (FIT) Kids Act. As your representative, I need your input to best serve the residents of the Second District of Kansas.

I appreciate you expressing your opinion regarding this piece of legislation, which has been referred to the House Committee on Education and Labor. I believe that it is important to emphasize healthy and active lifestyles for today’s kids. We need to find workable solutions to address the high rates of childhood obesity in this country today.

This Week in Congress – 9/10 to 9/16/07

On Monday, September 10th, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee held a joint hearing with the Foreign Affairs Committee to hear testimony on the status of the war and political developments in Iraq. Among the witnesses were General David Petraeus, the commander of our forces in Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, the United States Ambassador to Iraq. Both men presented very valuable and objective testimony on our military and strategic progress in Iraq.

Monday evening I flew home to Kansas in time for a 9/11 candlelight vigil and memorial service near Wescoe Hall on the University of Kansas campus. The ceremony was a truly moving, important opportunity to reflect on one of the most tragic days in our nation's history.

On Tuesday, the Eastern Kansas Health Care System held a town hall meeting at the Topeka VA, where I was privileged to join and hear the perspectives of health care professionals. Later, retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey delivered keynote remarks at a Command and General Staff College Foundation dinner in Kansas City, Missouri.

On Wednesday, I held a Congress on Your Corner at Brewster Place, a retirement home in Topeka. Our conversation focused on legislative issues that affect senior citizens, such as Medicare and Social Security. Members of my staff also opened constituent services cases for seniors who had encountered problems with federal agencies.

On Thursday, my office held another senior-oriented Congress on Your Corner at Cornerstone Village in Pittsburg. Later in the day, I joined a live broadcast of the Community Bridges radio program on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan.

Friday was a very exciting, rewarding day. My staff and I were pleased to attend a welcome home ceremony for the Kansas National Guard 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation Regiment at the Kansas Expocentre. Afterwards, I delivered welcoming remarks to about 60 new United States citizens at a naturalization ceremony at the Franklin Carlson US Courthouse in Topeka, where District Court Judge Julie Robinson presided.

Over the weekend, I joined members of my congregation at Countryside United Methodist Church in Topeka for a mission trip to southeast Kansas to help residents recover from the recent flooding.
