Casework Corner - Medicare Open Season Approaching

By Judy Jewsome
District Representative

It’s that time again!

It's time to reflect on the pros and cons of your Medicare insurance and prescription drug plans and to review the options available if adjustments are needed. Annual enrollment for Medicare Part D will begin this November 15th and run through December 31st. Likewise, general enrollment for the health plans begins on January 1, 2008 and runs through March 31, 2008.

As of April of this year, approximately 39 million people across the United States have enrolled in one of the numerous prescription drug plans approved by Medicare. After some growing pains in the first few months of the program’s existence, the Department of Health and Human Services reports that approximately 100 million Part D prescriptions are being filled every month.

Program providers offer a wide range of plan options with premiums starting at $11.30. The Medicare website lists basic information for each plan and breaks the options down by state and county.

To learn more about the Medicare prescription drug plans and or to obtain assistance in selecting a plan, inquire online at www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227 or 1-877-486-2048 for TTY service). If you are on a limited income, you may qualify for a low-income subsidy to help with premium payments for the Medicare prescription drug program. To determine if you are eligible for this benefit, apply online at www.socialsecurity.gov or over the phone at 1-800-772-1213.

The Department of Health and Human Services and the Social Security are both committed to resolving any problems faced during the enrollment process or in the use of the services. However, please feel free to contact our Constituent Services office for assistance with issues regarding claims or service.
