WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip and former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, James E. Clyburn, issued the following statement today in recognition of the centennial anniversary of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
“Since its inception in 1908, the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority has breached socioeconomic and racial barriers and provided opportunities for African American women unavailable to minorities in the early 20th century. As the oldest Greek-letter organization founded by college-educated African American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha has demonstrated its commitment to leadership, community service, and the professional development of thousands of female entrepreneurs.”
“Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha is poised to continue its legacy as a steward of public service with over 200,000 members in 950 chapters worldwide. Through its Extraordinary Service Programs and educational, health, and business initiatives, Alpha Kappa Alpha has contributed to the development of civic minded and socially responsible young adults. Alpha Kappa Alpha has raised national awareness about living conditions within economically depressed African American communities.”
“As a member of the historic Omega Psi Phi fraternity, I congratulate the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority on its commitment to over 100 years of leadership and public service.”
