WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today responded to the President’s decision to send the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to Congress.
“I am disappointed in the President’s lack of consultation, blatant disregard for protocol, and false sense of urgency created by his dispatch of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to Congress. By law and tradition, Congress plays a key role and should be a partner in a successful trade agenda, but the President’s go-it-alone strategy could jeopardize the prospects of passing Colombia FTA.
“Last year, the House approved the 2008 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill which directs U.S. funds to help address the root of numerous problems in Colombia. We must remain actively and positively engaged with Colombia. However, there remains widespread concern in Congress about several issues in Colombia, including the level of violence against union members, civil society leaders and civilians.”
