Congress in Your Inbox - Boyda Listens to Budget Concerns in the District

Plane Talk – US Air Flight 3332, Seat 3D

Headed back to DC after two whole wonderful weeks back in Kansas. It was so nice to be home. Would like it to have been longer!

We held a Tax Workshop in Topeka and six Congress on Your Corners in Franklin, Miami, Nemaha, Pottawatomie, Osage, and Bourbon Counties. What's on people's minds?  Gas prices, the economy, immigration, the war, health care. The level of concern seems to be getting much more pronounced.  People are getting squeezed from all sides. I used to get a question every now and then about the deficit. Now it's almost every time.  I tell people it's one of the reasons I ran in the first place.

So what do we do?  First, let's go after the low hanging fruit. That just seems obvious. Do you know anyone who thinks the five big oil companies should continue to get tax breaks? So why are they still getting them?  The big five oil companies made over $120 billion in profits last year and yet they got $18 billion in tax breaks.

I wonder what some members of Congress say to their constituents when asked why they voted to continue these massive subsidies.  At first they tried to call it a tax increase, but people were way too smart to buy that!  I'm not sure what they are trying to say at this point.

So I'm back to DC. We must work to cut these massive deficits and get our country on more solid ground.  I'm hopeful the voice of the big oil lobbyists will be drowned out by good Kansans who are just as concerned as I am.

Democracy is a contact sport!

Keep in touch,
Nancy
