Congress in Your Inbox - Greensburg Visit, FEMA Deadline

Dear Friend,

Last Sunday, Rep. Jerry Moran, Rep. Dennis Moore, and I gathered together in Greensburg, Kansas, which was struck last month by a devastating F5 tornado. We joined emergency management personnel, local lawmakers, and others for an afternoon tour of the town.

As you can well imagine, the experience was both troubling and inspiring. The tornado decimated everything in its two-mile-wide path, reducing trees to stumps and buildings to ruins. But already new growth is spreading across the ground, turning upturned brown soil to green.

Many houses, businesses, and places of worship were blown to the ground. But already the United Methodist Church has launched new services under a giant tent, where an out-of-tune piano leads the congregation through familiar, comforting hymns.

Over the course of the afternoon, we listened, we gave hugs, and we listened some more. Again and again I heard the residents of Greensburg say, with absolute certainty, that they will recover and rebuild. They are determined to march on.

I am deeply grateful to Rep. Moran for hosting our visit to Greensburg, and I hope you will join me in keeping the town’s residents in your hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

Sincerely,

Nancy Boyda
Member of Congress

Disaster Relief Deadline Approaching

If you suffered property damage in the tornadoes, storms, and floods that swept across Kansas in May, you should know that July 5 is the deadline to apply for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Residents of Leavenworth, Osage, Riley, and Shawnee counties are eligible for FEMA Individual Assistance, which helps homeowners, families, and businesses cover immediate, necessary expenses in the aftermath of a declared natural disaster. Funds may be used for housing, disaster-related medical and dental costs, clothing, household items, and other serious needs.

Even if you believe that your losses are covered by insurance, FEMA advises that you submit an assistance application by the July 5 deadline. An application will ensure your eligibility for FEMA relief in case your insurance claim is denied or does not cover your immediate needs.

To apply for individual disaster assistance, visit the FEMA website at http://www.fema.gov/assistance/index.shtm or call 1-800-621-FEMA. When you apply you should have a pen and paper available to write down important phone contacts. You will need your social security number, current and pre-disaster address, phone numbers, type of insurance coverage, total household annual income, and a routing and account number from your bank if you want to have disaster assistance funds transferred directly into your bank account.

This Week in Congress

I had a busy weekend during my most recent trip home to Kansas, June 22-25. On Saturday, June 23, I joined the families of Kansas National Guard members for a picnic at Topeka’s Forbes Field, where we talked about military readiness and shared our support for soldiers now serving overseas.

Later on Saturday, I participated in the Meet the Chatauquan Lunch at the Three Sisters Inn in Baldwin City, where actors brought history to life by portraying key figures from Kansas history. Afterwards, I joined the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Lecompton Constitution, where I spoke about the importance of Bleeding Kansas to our nation’s past and future.

On Sunday, I joined Rep. Jerry Moran and Rep. Dennis Moore for a tour of Greensburg, Kansas.

On Monday, I answered questions from callers to The Jim Cates Show on 1440 AM in Topeka. Later, I met with Marie Weldon, the director of the Topeka VA clinic, in my Topeka office before flying back to Washington, D.C., for Monday evening votes.

Next weekend will begin Congress’s week-long Independence Day recess. Over the course of the week, I plan to host Congress on Your Corners in Linn, Nemaha, and Labette Counties. I’ll announce details in next week’s e-newsletter, and I hope to see you at one of the events!
