Statement on President Bush's Announcement That He Will Order Some Troops Home from Iraq While Sending Additional Troops to Afghanistan

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, September 9, 2008)—U.S. Representative Tom Allen issued the following statement on President Bush’s announcement today that he will order some troops home from Iraq while sending additional troops to Afghanistan:

“With his announcement that he will bring some American troops home from Iraq while sending more American troops to Afghanistan, President Bush is doing what I have advocated for some time.  In both instances, however, it appears that the levels are substantially below what are needed.  Bush will leave his successor with more troops in Iraq than before the surge, while the force level in Afghanistan will still not reflect what our military commanders have said is needed.  By taking forces out of Iraq while adding forces in Afghanistan, the President's action proves what I have said all along: the Iraq War has been a costly diversion away from the war against those who attacked us on 9/11.”
