WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today responded to the Department of Labor jobs report which showed the loss of 80,000 jobs in the month of March.
“Americans awoke this morning to more bad news on the economy. The unemployment rate rose to 5.1 percent and the loss of 80,000 jobs in March is much worse than expected. The Bush economy is taking its toll on the American people.
Democrats have already enacted an economic stimulus package that will provide relief to families in need, including providing Recovery Rebates and raising loan limits for mortgages backed by the FHA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac, and allowing more families to get into mortgages with better terms.
In the House we have also strengthened consumer protections against risky housing loans in the future, strengthened the regulation of government-sponsored enterprises like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and we’ve increased the supply of affordable rental housing to lower the need for risky mortgages.
“But there is more to be done. I believe a second stimulus package is warranted to help strengthen the economy, create jobs and help the American people who are struggling under the Bush economy. I hope the President will join us in our efforts.”
