Committee Survey Finds DHS Open Source Intelligence Efforts Need Improvement

September 12, 2008 (WASHINGTON) – Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced the release of a report created by the Majority Staff of the Committee on Homeland Security on the Department of Homeland Security’s open source intelligence efforts. The report, entitled “Giving a Voice to Open Source Stakeholders: A Survey of State, Local & Tribal Law Enforcement” details the intelligence needs of State, local, and tribal law enforcement and finds that the Department has not yet effectively disseminated timely and actionable open source intelligence products.

Chairman Thompson released the following statement along with the report:

“The Department is far behind the rest of the Intelligence Community in implementing a comprehensive open source intelligence program to serve the needs of State, local & tribal law enforcement,” said Thompson. “After surveying over 350 State, local and tribal stakeholders, I am convinced that the Department must make a concerted effort to understand their intelligence needs and produce intelligence products that provide actionable recommendations for the cop on the beat.”
