Washington, DC – The U.S. Senate has commended Idaho on winning the bid to host the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games, according to Idaho Senators Larry Craig and Mike Crapo. The legislation, S. Res. 196, was passed by Unanimous Consent.

The legislation, introduced by Crapo and co-sponsored by Craig, notes that the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games will be the “largest multi-sport event ever held in the State of Idaho. ” It notes that Special Olympics “advances the understanding of intellectual disabilities in the community and the Nation through participation and fellowship.”

“In two months, the ski slopes and arenas of Idaho will be filled with Special Olympians from around the world,” Craig said. “As the honorary chair of these games, I am grateful to the Senate for recognizing Idaho and especially for supporting those participants whose talent, spirit and courage will inspire us in February.”

“Special Olympics serves more than two million people with disabilities and a strong representation from the group will travel to Idaho for the Games during February,” Crapo said. “Idaho will truly be on the world stage hosting a major humanitarian event and our state’s efforts were once again spotlighted today in the United States Senate.”

The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games are scheduled to be held in Idaho from February 6-13, 2009.
