Search Guidelines

The key to an effective search is choosing specific search terms. Entering multiple terms serves to narrow the focus of your search so that you can find the information you need more quickly. When choosing search terms or keywords for your query, keep these general guidelines in mind:

  • Capitalization not required - this search function is not case sensitive, so no need to capitalize names or other proper nouns
  • Place a space between terms - typing the word "and" between multiple terms is unneccessary since only pages containing all of your search terms will be returned on the results page
  • Automatic spellcheck included - when a keyword is misspelled, the system will suggest alternate search terms
  • Common words are excluded - common words are ignored by the search function because they slow down your search and do not tend to improve results, but these words can be included in a Phrase Search
  • Choose to exclude with Negative Terms - type a minus sign before any term you want to use to disqualify a page from the results list
  • Use quotation marks for Phrase Searches - find pages which include an exact phrase or combination of words by placing double quotation marks around the entire phrase
