Clyburn Statement on Black History Month

Monday, February 4, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement to commemorate Black History Month:

“The month of February provides all Americans with an excellent opportunity to celebrate the many worthwhile and invaluable contributions that African-Americans have made to the advancement of our diverse society.

“The courageous efforts of human rights icons such as Frederick Douglas and Martin Luther King, Jr., and the innovations of George Washington Carver and Charles R. Drew are engrained and integrated parts of our rich history and should be celebrated by all Americans.

“As the first African-American to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Congress since the 1890's, I fully appreciate and understand the vital importance of observing Black History Month.  And as a Member of the Congressional Leadership, I will continue to work with my colleagues in advancing a legislative agenda that benefits all people of all colors.”
