Chairmen Miller and Andrews Statement on Signing of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

May 21, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, and U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), chairman of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions, issued the following statement today after President George W. Bush signed into law the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act:

“The protections guaranteed in the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act are long overdue. The bill signed into law today will ensure that Americans’ personal genetic information will be protected and will not be used for discriminatory purposes. Although many states already prohibit the discriminatory use of personal genetic information, every American deserves these protections. By enacting the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, those Americans who have forgone testing for fear of losing their jobs or their health insurance are now protected.”
