Kansas Will Get $45 Million to Help With Winter Heating Bills

Topeka, KS – Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District) announced the release of $5.1 billion in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds. Kansas will receive more than $45 million in LIHEAP funding.

Representative Boyda said, “Home heating costs, on average, have more than doubled since 2001. And experts say heating expenditures will likely reach record levels again this winter. The cost per family to stay warm this season is expected to top $2,300. That’s a sobering thought for Kansans already struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills.  Now more than ever, families need relief from high energy costs. To that end, Congress doubled the critical investment in energy relief to help seniors and working families keep the heat on this winter.”

An additional two million households across America will benefit from this year’s LIHEAP funding. The average grant per household will increase over FY 2008 from $355 to $550.

“We need more of this type of bipartisan cooperation in Washington as we work quickly to address the serious and urgent challenges of the slowing economy and high energy prices,” added Boyda.
