Napolitano Begins Work on Three New Subcommittees

(Washington D.C.)- Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano (D-Norwalk), who was successful in getting appointed to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, announced today her selection – based on the most pressing needs of her district – to work on the following subcommittees in the 110th Congress:

Subcommittee on Highways and Transit: Charged with responsibilities relating to the construction of roads and transit facilities and the development of national surface transportation policy, including safety and research measures.  The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines & Hazardous Materials: Oversees the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) that is responsible for administering Federal railroad safety laws.  The broad safety authority of the FRA encompasses railroad safety practices and inspection of railroad operations for compliance with Federal safety requirements.  The subcommittee has jurisdiction over railroad development programs, such as high-speed rail research, rail infrastructure programs, and federal oversight of Amtrak.  The subcommittee also overseas hazardous materials transportation and the safety regulation of pipelines, as administered by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment: Maintains jurisdiction over the water resources projects and regulations of the Army Corp of Engineers, the Clean Water Act, Superfund, and water infrastructure protection programs of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Groundwater protection programs of EPA and Army Corp of Engineers.

“It is with great anticipation that I look forward to working with my colleagues on each of these three tremendously important subcommittees and I will bring much needed perspective from my current work on issues of congestion relief, rail safety, and water resources,” Napolitano said.  “I will continue to advocate on behalf of the transportation needs we face locally in the eastern half of Los Angeles County, as it has the most congested and underserved transportation system in the country.”

Members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee met Tuesday evening and made bids on the subcommittee assignments of their choice, with preferences given according to seniority on the committee.  Congresswoman Napolitano is the most senior new member to the Committee.
