Boyda Will Introduce Bill to Punish Crooked Politicians
01/12/07LEGISLATION WOULD END PENSIONS TO REPRESENTATIVES WHO BREAK THE LAW WHILE IN OFFICE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second Congressional District) announced today that she will introduce legislation to prevent representatives who commit federal crimes during their service from collecting a government pension.
Boyda said, "Next week I will introduce, and the House will consider, legislation to assure that Members who commit certain federal crimes related to the performance of their official duties do not benefit from a federal pension based on their service in the Congress."
Although the details of the bill are still being finalized, it is based on a measure (section 601 of HR 4975) that passed the House last year and on an identical provision that was contained in the Democrats' Motion to Recommit on that bill.
Boyda said, “Representatives who commit crimes while in office violate not only their oaths but the trust of the American people. Taxpayers shouldn't fund pensions to politicians who misuse their elected offices."
