Boyda Statement on Seventh Anniversary of 9/11

(Washington, D.C.) – Today marks the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District) issued the following statement, calling upon Americans to commemorate September 11 as a day of remembrance:

“Thousands of innocent men, women and children lost their lives seven years ago today. On this anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we continue to honor their memories and extend our heartfelt sympathies to their loved ones. We must commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of countless law enforcement personnel, first responders, and volunteers, who immediately went into action to help their fellow Americans. They selflessly risked and, in many cases, sacrificed their own lives.

“These past seven years, Americans on every level…local, state and federal… everyday citizens, soldiers and members of government…have worked tirelessly to improve our nation’s security and protect our people. Today, our resolve to defeat terrorist organizations remains strong.

“A very important piece of legislation was enacted in August 2007 to improve our homeland security – thereby helping to protect Americans from terrorism. The legislation (H.R. 1) completes the enactment of the recommendations of the bipartisan, independent 9/11 Commission into law. Within three years, there must be100 percent screening of cargo on passenger aircraft. Within five years, virtually all seaborne cargo must be scanned before it reaches the ports of America. The law also better ensures emergency communication between first responders and improves rail and mass transit security.

“The most important responsibility of Congress is to protect Americans. We will continue to work hard to ensure that critical steps are being taken to improve our homeland security and disrupt and defeat terrorist organizations around the world.

“Tragedy has a way of bringing people together. It reminds us that, above all else, we are all Americans. As we remember September 11, 2001, I hope we remember not only the grief of that day but also that extraordinary sense of community. Even seven years later, we still grieve together for our fallen. We still pray together for our soldiers. We are – and will remain – one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.

“May God continue to bless the United States of America.”
