U.S. House of Representatives Votes to Halt Mexican Trucking Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District) announced that by a margin of 395-18, the U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to end the nonsensical program which allows trucks from Mexico to drive far past the border into the United States.

Rep. Boyda said, “Congress and the American people have stated emphatically they want to end this program…and to end it now. Since the Department of Transportation and now the White House don’t seem to get the message, we have made it crystal clear to them with this legislation. Enough is enough!”

The Department of Transportation began the program last year, without fulfilling the requirements of legislation passed by Congress. The legislation contained language from a Boyda-written bill, H.R. 1773, the Safe American Roads Act, Boyda that required that 22 specific, stringent safety criteria had to be met before trucks from Mexico would be allowed on U.S highways.

Despite their failure to comply with American safety requirements, in September 2007, a hundred Mexican trucking companies began to carry cargo far beyond the usual border zones.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) then announced on August 4, 2008, it would continue the pilot program to allow Mexican trucks to drive into the United States.

Boyda now urges her colleagues in the Senate to protect the safety of American motorists by voting for H.R. 6630.
