Boyda Congratulates Class of 2012 Service Academy Recruits from Second District

(TOPEKA) – Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Second District of Kansas) announced today that Michael Stacks of Louisburg, Mitchell Metzler of Topeka, Christopher Nelson of Leavenworth and Shaun Kelsey of Parsons have accepted appointments into the United States Service Academies with the Class of 2012.

As a part of the application process to the academies, these students were recipients of Congressional Nominations from Congresswoman Boyda. To earn this nomination the students went through a long application process and were interviewed by the Second District of Kansas Academy Nomination Selection board. This group is made up members of the Second District who have strong backgrounds in educational, military and leadership roles and many of which are Academy alumni.

“These students have gone above and beyond to demonstrate incredible strengths in academic studies, leadership in extracurricular activities, a commitment to civic duty and a good strong moral character,” said Congresswoman Boyda. “These individuals have the qualities that will make them succeed both as students and officers in our military. I am sincerely proud to have them representing Kansas at the Academies this year. I offer my congratulations to these students and their families and wish them the best in all of their future endeavors.”

Michael Lamment Stacks is a recent graduate of Louisburg High school. Mike was very actively involved with his high school as a member of the football and golf teams in addition to the Renaissance Club, High School Varsity Debate Team, High School Varsity Forensics Team, and Student Advisory Council. He also served as Freshman and Senior Class President. In 2006, Michael was inducted into the National Honor Society. Michael has accepted his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy.

Mitchell Richard Dean Metzler has accepted his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Mitch was a 2007 graduate of Hayden High School in Topeka where he was very active with the school baseball team and a member of the National Honor Society. Upon graduation he received a scholarship from the United States Air Force Academy’s Falcon Foundation to attend Northwestern Prep School during the fall of 2007, and during this past spring semester he attended classes at Washburn University.

Christopher Joseph Nelson is a recent graduate of Leavenworth High school where he was very active with JROTC and his church youth group. Growing up, Chris was in a military family and had a lifelong dream of serving in the Army as a helicopter pilot. Chris has accepted his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point this fall.

Shaun Ryan Kelsey has accepted his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Shaun graduated this spring from Labette County High School in Parsons. During his high school career, Shaun was very active with the school track and wrestling teams, Chess Club and the martial arts.
