Boyda Concludes 2008 "Congress on Your Corner" Listening Tour

TOPEKA, KS – Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District) on Saturday concluded her second annual "Congress on Your Corner" Listening Tour. The 2008 tour wrapped up at Bichelmeyer’s Steak House in Tonganoxie, Kansas. Leavenworth County was the final stop on a 26 week tour which included stops in each of the 26 counties in the Kansas Second Congressional District.

Throughout the tour, Rep. Boyda met one-on-one with constituents to discuss their legislative concerns, answer questions, and offer assistance with federal agencies. Rep. Boyda also held three tax workshops in Leavenworth, Pittsburgh and Topeka. Since taking office in January of 2007, 4,321 Kansans have attended these town hall meetings.

The economy, immigration, veterans’ affairs, energy, environment, and healthcare topped the list of concerns. Economical concerns were a topic of discussion at every stop. Rep. Boyda said, “People are hurting. I have many people tell me that they used to be part of the middle class, but now they can barely make ends meet.”

Rep. Boyda is optimistic about the effect of the stimulus package. “It’s a good first step, but we still have a lot of work to do.” Rep. Boyda urged everyone to buy American with the money they receive to help stimulate the economy.

Rep. Boyda added about the economy, “The war in Iraq has cost our country over 600 billion dollars.” The Congresswoman will be among other freshmen Democrats on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. discussing Iraq reconstruction costs. The overall message is “enough is enough.”

The next "Congress on Your Corner" Listening Tour will kick off early 2009. Rep. Boyda said, “These Kansas counties may be a long way from Washington, D.C. but I am honored to be their voice in Washington, D.C.”
