Boyda, Freshman Democrats Ask Leadership to Stop Charging American Taxpayers For Iraq Reconstruction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (Kansas Second District) called on Congressional leadership to stop charging the American taxpayer for reconstruction projects in Iraq and to call on the government of Iraq to take more ownership over reconstruction projects and training for security forces in the upcoming Emergency Supplemental legislation.

Boyda said “Five years and $45 billion dollars in money given to Iraq for the purposes of reconstruction is more than enough. It is time for the Iraqi government to step up and take some responsibility.” This Democratic Freshman Class proposal requires the Iraqi government to take ownership of reconstruction projects, including project costs, and requires the Iraqi government to take more responsibility for the $153 million the United States spends per month on fuel in Iraq.

In 2008, the Iraqi government is expected to make $70 billion in oil revenue. Rep. Boyda said, “Taxpayers are being hit with a double whammy. Once at the gas pumps and then again with money that we’re just giving to Iraq with no strings attached. It is important that the Iraqi government has a financial stake in these reconstruction efforts. ”
