Congressional Budget Returns Fiscal House to Balance

Thursday, June 5, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding House passage of the conference report for the Concurrent Budget Resolution for fiscal year 2009.

“Today, the New Direction Congress passed a budget resolution that is fiscally responsible, financially transparent, and economically sound.  Most important, it reflects the needs of the American people and returns our budget to balance in five years.

“This budgetary plan seeks to boost our receding economy by increasing funding for job training programs, middle-class tax cuts, and pressing infrastructure needs.  It also accommodates a $50 billion increase to expand children’s health insurance to cover millions of uninsured children and strengthens safety net programs by funding the Social Services Block Grant and housing aid, in contrast to the President’s budget, which cuts funding for these programs.

“The federal budget is a moral document that should reflect the values and priorities of this nation.  I’m pleased this budget blueprint is balanced, strengthens our economy and addresses our nation’s most pressing needs.”
