WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today commented on the third anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
“It is stunning to me that in the United States of America, there are people who were so dramatically failed by their federal government that three years later they still lack adequate housing, schools, access to health care, infrastructure and other needs. Yet despite the challenges, the people of the Gulf Coast region have demonstrated dramatic strength, perseverance, and kindness. This disaster stands as both a symbol of the failures of the Bush Administration and the possibilities of America.
“When we visited this July, our third trip to the region to mark the anniversary, we saw the hope and the future of the region and we recommitted ourselves to a partnership for the future. Since the trip, the president agreed to extend the cost-share requirements relieving the financial burden on levee rebuilding and coastal protection. We will continue to push for an investigation into the failure of the government. And we are committed to providing continued assistance for needs in health care, education, housing, infrastructure and more.
“We mark this solemn anniversary today as our brothers and sisters along the Gulf Coast watch closely the developments of Gustav. We pray for the safety of the region and we stand with you in sunshine or storm.”
