WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today was pleased to see the President respond to calls from him and his congressional colleagues to extend the payment deadline for Louisiana’s share of levee construction.  Clyburn led a delegation of House members to the Gulf Coast from July 19-22, which called on the President to extend the time to 30 years for the state to repay $1.8 billion, its share of the hurricane protection.

“Coastal Louisiana still faces many financial challenges to restore its infrastructure, education system, health care facilities and more.  The added burden of repaying $1.8 billion for critical hurricane protection was too much to ask of a state still struggling to rebuild and restore basic needs in New Orleans and its coastal towns.  I’m pleased the President heard the call for assistance from our delegation and from the people of Louisiana.  With the stroke of his pen, he did the right thing. ”
