Clyburn on Emergency Funding for New Orleans Levees

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding funding under consideration to strengthen levees in New Orleans.  The funding is being considered for inclusion in the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2008.

“Since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the region, House Democrats committed to helping rebuild the Gulf Coast and have consistently lived up to those commitments.  Last summer when we returned to the region, I was proud to report that we had delivered on our promises by providing $6.4 billion for education, infrastructure, health care, housing, public safety and more.  Four months later, we provided $3 billion to help complete the shortfall in funding for the Road Home program.

“Currently we are considering a request for funding to help restore the levees in New Orleans.  We understand this funding is vital to ensuring 100-year flood protection, especially since hurricane season just started.  It is a priority of mine to have the funding included in the final bill Congress sends to the President.

“In addition, there are still critical needs in health care, housing, public safety and water infrastructure among so many others, for which emergency funding is necessary.  It’s my priority to help provide funding for these critical civic and human needs.  Any additional funding is opposed by the White House, and, despite his repeated assurances to rebuild and restore the Gulf Coast, President Bush has promised to veto the bill if it is included.  I hope the President will reconsider his position.”
