Clyburn on Job Loss Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. –House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC) today commented on the continuing bad news about the job situation in the United States.  The US Labor Department reported today that 20,000 jobs were shed in April, the fourth month in a row of job loss.  Job loss in 2008 alone totals 260,000.

“Seven years of failed economic policies from the Bush administration are now taking their toll on the US economy.  We’re seeing continued job loss, record high gas prices, increasing health care costs, and rising food prices.  The Bush economy has done enough damage to American families—it’s time for change.

“Recovery Rebate Checks are beginning to arrive in mail boxes and bank accounts, and Democrats are fighting for a second stimulus package that invests in a summer jobs program, rebuilding infrastructure to create more jobs and extending much-needed unemployment benefits.  Democrats will also begin comprehensively addressing the housing and mortgage crisis next week with legislation to stabilize the housing market, the national economy and American neighborhoods.

"Democrats understand that working families are struggling, so we’re taking concrete steps to relieve their suffering in the face of terrific opposition from the Bush Administration and congressional Republicans who are committed to the status quo."
