WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today clarified remarks on a possible U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement in a statement below.
“The House has passed significant trade legislation during the 110th Congress, including a free trade agreement with Peru. However, there remains widespread concern in Congress about several issues in Colombia, including the level of violence against union members, civil society leaders and civilians. I hope the Administration would follow the established protocol of Congressional consultation before submitting a Colombia FTA. Failure to do so would risk an adverse vote on the agreement.
“Last year, the House approved the 2008 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill which directs U.S. funds to help address the root of numerous problems in Colombia. We must remain actively and positively engaged with Colombia.”
