Clyburn Encourages President to Support Real Economic Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement in response to a speech that President Bush gave this morning to the Economic Club of New York regarding the economy.
“The President’s misplaced insistence that extending tax cuts to the super-rich and obscenely profitable oil companies will revive our slumping economy illustrates just how out of touch his policies are with the struggles of everyday working Americans.
“If our economy is going to rebound, it will require the President working with Congress on initiatives that build upon the foundation established by the Economic Stimulus package that was recently signed into law. That means supporting proposals such as fully funding our Highway Trust Fund and creating a summer jobs program for young people and restoring our slumping housing market.
“With gas prices rising, food prices soaring, and the housing market plummeting, it’s time to act. I encourage the President to end his laissez-faire policies and join Congress in our efforts to move our economy in a New Direction.”
