WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, today released the following statement honoring civil rights icon Rosa Parks on what would have been her 95th birthday:

“Rosa Parks was a courageous individual who, by refusing to give up her seat on a public transit bus over 50 years ago, took a stand for justice and brought international attention to the plight of minorities suffering under the reprehensible grips of Jim Crow and the segregationist practices prevalent in the 1950s.

“Several decades have passed since Mrs. Parks bravely disobeyed that Montgomery, Alabama city ordinance that subjected African-Americans and other communities of color to unjust and inhumane treatment.  However, her defiant stance against the evils of discrimination served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement and America is now a better country because of her efforts.

“America is forever indebted to Rosa Parks.  It is my hope that her legacy will live on and inspire others to champion the causes of the underprivileged and underserved.”
