WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement to commemorate the upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday.

“As preparations get underway to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., it is important that we all take a minute this holiday weekend to applaud the many outstanding achievements of this great American.

“His inspirational messages of peace and brotherhood helped propel our nation out of the dark and segregationist grips of Jim Crow and into a more enlightened era where equality and human rights are now more paramount fixtures of American society.

“Our country has progressed tremendously over the last several decades because of the courageous sacrifices made by Dr. King.  His actions motivated America’s leading politicians to enact laws that enhanced our civil rights protections and ensured that every citizen was given a fair and free right to vote.

“As our democracy continues to mature and serve the needs of our ever expanding and diverse citizenry, it is important that we always remember the insightful teachings of Dr. King.”
