Tax reform is long overdue to ease the burden on individuals, working families and businesses. I support sensible changes that would make our tax system fairer and simpler, and strengthen the economy.
In the first 100 hours of the 110th Congress, “pay-as-you-go” spending was restored to end deficit spending and reduce the national deficit. We passed a budget for Fiscal Year 2008 which will eliminate the deficit in five years, and runs a surplus of $41 billion in 2012. By exercising fiscal responsibility, Congress will be able to reduce the tax burden on its citizens and invest in economic growth.
I am proud to support measures that will provide immediate tax relief to small business and working families. I supported a $1.3 billion tax credit package aimed at strengthening America’s small businesses (H.R. 976, the Small Business Tax Relief Act). This priority is a cornerstone of the Fiscal Year 2008 budget, which extends the child tax credit; extends the 10 percent individual income bracket; provides marriage penalty relief; and creates a tax-cut for an estimated 23 million Americans by establishing a long-term fix for the Alternative Minimum Tax.
