Chairman Miller Announces New Staff for Education and Labor Committee

WASHINGTON, DC -- Rep. George Miller (D-CA), Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, today announced new hires for the majority staff of the Committee.

“I am excited to have such a talented and experienced group of individuals join the Committee staff,” Miller said. “I am confident that they will bolster the Committee’s work to enact policies that grow and strengthen America’s middle class and make life better for America’s families.”

Tico Almeida, 30, joins the Committee as Labor Policy Advisor.  Almeida worked for Mr. Miller’s Committee staff prior to enrolling at Yale Law School, from which he graduated in 2004.  He then worked for two years as the public interest litigation fellow at the New York law firm Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP.  While in private practice, he split his time between litigation and regulatory matters for several investment banks and pro bono representation on behalf of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Lambda Legal Defense, and several individual immigration clients.  Last year, Almeida served as law clerk to Judge Sidney H. Stein of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.  He has also worked for the AFL-CIO and UNITE!.

Christopher Brown, 28, joins the Committee as Labor Policy Advisor.  Brown served as a Legal Intern for the then-Education and Workforce Committee in 2006. He has also worked as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Clarence Cooper of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, the American Civil Liberties Union and the law firm of Greene & Letts in the Corporate and Employment Divisions.   Brown, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and his law degree from DePaul University College of Law.

Patrick Findlay, 29, joins the committee as Investigative Counsel.  He previously served as an Assistant Attorney General in New York.  He has also worked as a litigation associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in New YorkFindlay has clerked for the Honorable Fortunato P. Benavides of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Austin, Texas and for the Honorable Keith P. Ellison of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas in Laredo, TexasFindlay graduated from the University of Texas and received his J.D. from the University of Chicago.

Marjorie Bingham-Hamilton joins the committee as Financial Staff Assistant.  She was previously the Human Resources Coordinator at Network, a national Catholic social justice lobbying group, and has also worked for the Folger Shakespeare Library and the D.C. Office of Personnel.  Hamilton is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University (formerly Clark College) and received her M.S.A. in Human Resources Management from Trinity University in Washington, D.C.

Will Johnston, 23, joins the Committee as New Media Specialist.  He previously worked for Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) and as a website designer for PC TechSpec.  Johnston has also worked as a credit analyst for AccuScore, Inc.  Johnston is a 2005 graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois with a degree in theology.

Sharon Lewis, 41, joins the Committee as Disability Policy Advisor. Sharon previously served as a Joseph P. Kennedy Policy Fellow for Senator Chris Dodd’s Subcommittee on Children and Families. Prior to that, she was responsible for public policy for The Arc of Oregon and the Oregon Developmental Disabilities Coalition.  A native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Portland, Oregon, Sharon received her Bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis.

Margaret Young, 26, joins the Committee as Education Staff Assistant.  She has previously worked as 3rd and 4th grade teacher with Teach for America in Chicago and as an Assistant Manager at Paper Source in Washington, DC.  Young is a 2003 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in International Studies.
