Chairman Miller Statement on President Signing Bill to Safeguard Federal Student Loan Access for American Families

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today after President George W. Bush signed the Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008 (H.R. 5715) into law.

“Today we have taken another big step in the right direction for students and families working hard to pay for college in a very tough economy. Over the past year and a half, the Democratic Congress has built a strong record of working in a bipartisan way to help make college more affordable and accessible and enacting policies that make sense for students, families, and taxpayers. Last year we enacted the most significant increase in federal student aid since the GI Bill of 1944, which will mean cheaper federal college loans and increased Pell Grant scholarship aid for students beginning this fall. With this bill signed into law, students and families now have every assurance that they will continue to have access to all the federal student loans they are eligible for, no matter what happens in the nation’s financial markets.”
