WASHINGTON, DC -- {.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today after the New York State Legislature passed legislation, the Student Lending Accountability, Transparency and Enforcement Act of 2007, which would address conflicts of interest within the student loan industry. The bill was developed by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who testified before the committee last month about his ongoing investigation into the $85 billion student loan industry.
"I commend the New York state legislature and Attorney General Cuomo for swiftly passing this bill and sending it to the Governor's desk. Their leadership has set a superb example of what it means to truly protect and serve the public interest. In the Congress, we will continue to strengthen our legislation, the Student Loan Sunshine Act, which would prevent the corrupt and unethical practices in the student loan industry and restore the trust that students and families deserve to have in the student aid programs."
