Chairman Miller Statement on Introduction of Cuomo's Bill for New York Colleges

Monday, April 16, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, today praised New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and New York state lawmakers for introducing a bill that would require all colleges and universities in the state of New York to abide by a code of ethics.

"Attorney General Cuomo and New York state leaders have done the right thing for New York's students today by introducing legislation to ensure that schools abide by the highest ethical standards while working with student lenders. As the Congress works to prevent future unethical practices in the student loan industry, we must extend these protections to students across the country, so they can be assured that their college financial aid offices are acting in their best interests."

Miller has introduced legislation, the Student Loan Sunshine Act, that would clean up the relationships between student lenders and schools by requiring both institutions and lenders to fully disclose the nature of their relationships, and by banning gifts valued at more than $10 from lenders to college employees. The Education and Labor Committee will hear from Cuomo on April 25th at an investigative hearing into the student loan industry.
