Chairman Miller Statement on National Math Panel Report

Thursday, March 13, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today in response to the release of the National Math Panel’s report on why U.S. students are falling behind other industrialized countries. Among other things, the report found that the nation’s system for teaching math is “broken and must be fixed” if the U.S. wants to maintain its competitive edge.

“This report confirms that we need to improve math education in our nation’s schools by providing high-quality early education and providing the strong training and development that teachers need to give students top-notch math instruction. It’s clear that strengthening math instruction must be one of our top priorities if we are to get our students and our country on the right track. Every child in America deserves the best math education we can give them.”
