Chairman Miller Statement on House Passage of Budget Resolution

Thursday, June 5, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today after the House gave final approval to the 2009 federal budget:

“By investing in education and innovation while also maintaining fiscal responsibility, this budget truly is about a better future for our children and grandchildren. President Bush and Republicans in Congress want to shortchange our schools, stifle investments in America’s economic competitiveness, and do nothing to drain the sea of red ink that they have created over the last eight years. In contrast, the Democratic budget charts a new direction, providing significant funding increases to support key education priorities such as No Child Left Behind, Head Start and the Individuals with Disabilities Act. It protects financial aid for low-income students struggling to pay for college. And it invests in math and science education programs that are critical to preparing young people for jobs in this global, knowledge-based economy. I want to commend Chairman Spratt and House Democratic leaders for drafting and passing a budget resolution that recognizes that building a better, more secure future for our children should be our first priority.”
