Chairman Miller Statement on Education Department's Proposed Rules on Student Loans

Friday, June 1, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, made the following statement today on new rules on the federal student loan programs proposed by the Department of Education. Miller has been leading an investigation into the conflicts of interest and financial relationships among lenders, schools, and the public officials responsible for administering the federal student loan programs.

"Although we have not yet had an opportunity to thoroughly review over 200 pages of rules, we are pleased that the Department of Education has finally joined us in our efforts to clean up the student loan industry. Given the extent of corruption within these programs that has been highlighted by investigations by Congress and by state attorneys general, it is long past time for the Secretary to start acting in the best interests of students and their families."

Earlier this month, the House passed legislation authored by Miller, the Student Loan Sunshine Act, that would clean up the student loan industry by, among other things, protecting students from aggressive marketing tactics. For more information on that bill, click here.
