Portland Appearance: Burgerville

April 4, 2008

Dan Beard in Portland

While in Portland, the "greenest city in America," Dan met with Jeff Harvey (not pictured), President and CEO of Burgerville, a chain of 39 Pacific Northwest quick-service restaurants known for their support of local farmers and ranchers, as well as the environment.

Harvey explained the company is proud of their employee-led recycling and composting program, through which they plan to save a minimum of $100,000 in annual hauling fees to landfills. The company also converting all of their used cooking oil to biodiesel fuel. In 2007, they delivered 53,000 gallons of cooking oil to refineries for recycling, which was converted to 39,750 gallons of biodiesel for use by diesel-powered commercial trucks and cars.

Dan shared with Harvey the news that the House's food services is also composting waste and, like Burgerville, taking advantage of locally produced food.

In the accompanying photo, Dan is given a tour of one of Burgerville's restaurants and is being shown the machine that begins the process of turning "French fries into fuel."
