Senator Bennett believes the primary responsibility for educational decision-making rests at the local and state level, starting with parents. The federal government has historically played a supporting role to state and local governments to assist children with special needs, such as children with disabilities or children falling behind in reading or math. He has supported steps to increase flexibility in federal education programs to meet local needs, opposed more federal educational mandates, and sought to ensure Utah’s educational priorities and needs were reflected in federal education funding bills. | ||
| Senator Bob Bennett joined Utah students David Christensen and Sophie Jin at the 45th Anniversary United States Senate Youth Program Reception held in Washington, D.C., on March 7, 2007. David Christensen attends Woods Cross High School and Sophie Jin attends West High School in Salt Lake City. The U.S. Senate Youth Program selects two student leaders from each state to spend a week in Washington to experience their national government in action. The students also receive a $5,000 college scholarship certificate | |||

An advocate for enhancing literacy, he secured $650,000 to support a Utah State Office of Education program to improve reading in rural schools. |
