STEMWorks Indiana receives $2 million employment and training grant

Thursday, November 20, 2008

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar announced that the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) awarded the Indianapolis Private Industry Council funding totaling $1,999,946 for “STEMWorks Indiana.”

The Indianapolis Private Industry Council, through STEMWorks Indiana, seeks to create a comprehensive pipeline initiative to establish educational and occupational opportunities for two audiences: dislocated workers and disadvantaged students. STEMWorks Indiana, in conjunction with its partners, will aid central Indiana’s burgeoning industries by exposing young people to STEM occupations and focusing on updating the skills of dislocated workers. STEMWorks Indiana will utilize current certificate and associate’s degree programs, including accelerated programs in STEM disciplines and college-level courses for high school students, to provide training and ongoing support to ensure participant success and placement in gateway jobs.

“I appreciate the efforts of the Indianapolis Private Industry Council is making through the services envisioned in the STEMWorks Indiana program which will assist in creating new employment and personal development opportunities for many Hoosiers” said Lugar.

On January 15, 2008, the ETA issued a two-phase $10 million competitive Solicitation for Grant Applications (SGA) to fund Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities. Eligible applicants were Workforce Investment Boards. Other required partners include educators, STEM employers and industry-related organizations. Partnerships could also include national laboratories and centers, private foundations, professional organizations, and faith-based and community organizations.
