The Digital Television Transition
Richard G. Lugar, United States Senator for Indiana

The Digital Television Transition

Starting February 17, 2009, television stations will be required to broadcast in digital according to the Digital Television (DTV) Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005. The aim of the switch is to free up analog airwaves for public safety communications, including police, rescue squads and fire departments.

Individuals relying on an antenna for television service will need to purchase a converter box. Each household is eligible for two $40 coupons to offset the purchase of converter boxes. Apply for a coupon online or visit one of Senator Lugar's offices for a coupon application.

Televisions connected to cable or satellite will not be affected by the switch

The purchase of a new television is not necessary when using the converter box. Older (analog) televisions will continue to work with the new digital service when hooked up through the converter box.
